Undoubtedly the most important of Conan Doyle's science fiction works is The Lost World, a novel which is often compared with Jules Verne's Journey to the Centre of the Earth and Henry Rider Haggard's She: a history of adventure (a dream fantasy of a primitive people living amid the ruins of an ancient but more advanced society). The first is the great historical novels, of which Rodney Stone, Sir Nigel and The White Company are the best known examples, while the other is science fiction, a genre in which Doyle is ranked alongside other celebrated classic authors, including Jules Verne and H.G.Wells, as one of its leading founders.
